Russell Brand Convicted of Rape and Sexual Assault in London
The Story
British actor and comedian Russell Brand was convicted at Southwark Crown Court of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women in cases dating back more than twenty years.
Judge Joel Bennathan remanded Brand into custody after rejecting a bail application, stating that the defendant faces a prison term when he is sentenced on Monday. The jury of eight men and four women deliberated for over eight hours across two days following a four-week trial. Prosecutors described Brand as a calculating sexual predator who exploited his fame and influence to target women.
Brand denied all charges during the trial, testifying that he led a promiscuous life but never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity. Metropolitan Police detectives confirmed following the verdicts that investigation files regarding two additional allegations have been forwarded to prosecutors for review.
