Netanyahu Flies Over Europe, Canada En Route to UN Speech
The Story
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flew over Greece, Italy, France, and Canada on Thursday en route to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Gaza since October 2023. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated she asked her department for information regarding the flyover. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who had previously vowed to execute the ICC warrant, said his administration determined New York City does not have the independent legal authority to enforce it, urging the U.S. federal government to act.
Netanyahu's visit is brief, lasting only a few hours, and he is not scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. His office stated the short trip is to allow his return to Israel for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Netanyahu is expected to use his UN address to defend Israel's military actions, address the war in Gaza, warn about Iran, and criticize Mamdani. Protests are anticipated outside the UN headquarters. Israel rejects the ICC's jurisdiction and denies war crimes.
