Ukraine Strikes Russian Naval Base, Grain Terminals in Novorossiysk

Ukraine launched a massive drone and missile strike on Russia's port of Novorossiysk overnight, damaging two major grain export terminals and hitting the last large Russian naval base on the Black Sea. Local officials reported three people killed, including an eight-year-old child, and 24 injured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated Kyiv had launched rockets, jet, and naval drones in a unique operation targeting the naval base, which he described as the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. Ukraine's military later claimed four Russian warships were hit. Russia's agriculture ministry announced efforts to redirect cargo flows to alternative ports due to current logistical constraints.

The attack caused repeated explosions over Novorossiysk, leading to an emergency situation declaration and suspension of water supply. Vance had reportedly requested Ukraine cease attacks on non-Russian oil tankers using the Novorossiysk port, citing disruptions to global energy markets. Ukrainian officials indicated they very carefully listen to American partners and had paused strikes on such tankers since a July 31 call with Vance, provided the vessels were not sanctioned or carrying Russian cargo.

Russia has denounced Ukraine's attacks on oil tankers as terrorist acts. Chicago wheat futures rose approximately 3% amid concerns over potential disruptions to Russian grain exports.
