Netherlands Enforces Settlement Import Ban; Israeli Minister Calls for West Bank War
The Story
The Netherlands began enforcing a strict ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Golan Heights, and East Jerusalem on September 22, 2026.
Passengers arriving at Schiphol Airport from Tel Aviv reported thorough bag checks for prohibited items, including personal luggage and souvenirs. Intentional violation of the new rules is punishable by up to six years imprisonment or a fine, while unintentional violations can lead to up to one year in prison. Separately, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for a war against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, using the biblical term "Judea and Samaria."
Smotrich also advocated for the annexation of parts of south Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, stating Israel should do there what they did in Gaza. The Palestinian Authority condemned these statements as an explicit call for escalation, annexation, and displacement. Smotrich leads a far-right party that supports the annexation of the entire West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported the Palestinian death toll from the nearly three-year Israel-Hamas war surpassed 74,000, with 175,068 wounded. Since the October 10 ceasefire, 1,145 Palestinians and seven Israeli soldiers have been killed. On Sunday, an Israeli drone strike in Khan Younis killed one person and injured three others. Other drone attacks injured seven Palestinians in Gaza City.
Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered a general closure of the West Bank for the Sukkot holiday, and Israeli forces tightened restrictions around Ramallah. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recorded over 1,330 settler-related attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank from January to late July. Israel is heading for elections on October 27.
