Woman Arrested, Charged with Felonies in World War II Memorial Vandalism

Melissa L. Farris, 41, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, faces two federal felony charges following her arrest for allegedly vandalizing the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. U.S. These crimes carry potential sentences of up to 10 years in prison.

The alleged vandalism occurred on August 13, 2026, at the memorial's Atlantic Theatre Pavilion, where red and green graffiti reading "Clean hands dirty $" was sprayed. The memorial's fountain was also filled with soap suds, causing it to bubble. U.S. Park Police launched an investigation after the incident. A witness photographed a woman in the apparent act of spray painting the memorial, and law enforcement later identified her as Farris.

A U.S. Park Police officer recognized Farris from an August 10 arrest for unlawfully camping on federal property near the memorial. U.S. Attorney Pirro called the act a disgusting attack on a sacred monument and an insult to the Americans who fought and died for our country, noting her father and grandfather were among those Americans.

President Donald Trump condemned the vandalism as no greater insult to American heroes, stating, "First the Reflecting Pool, now this. We are on their trail! Where do these animals come from?" The Interior Department described the vandalism as an utter disgrace and pledged to find the responsible person. The Friends of the National World War II Memorial expressed deep disturbance, calling the defacement unacceptable.

Pirro has faced scrutiny from President Trump regarding her handling of a previous Reflecting Pool vandalism case. A coalition of about 90 lawyers and legal figures filed a disciplinary complaint against Pirro, accusing her of violating professional rules in that case and seven other politically charged prosecutions. D.C. activist Brianne Chapman stated on X that Farris is a mentally ill homeless person who believes she is being gang stalked by the federal government. Farris's own public videos show her in a fountain begging to be rescued, claiming she is homeless and being stalked by feds.
