Australia's capital city, Canberra, will join a gun buyback program as part of the response to a shooting spree that killed 15 people at a Jewish festival in Sydney in December.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Saturday that the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), which includes Canberra, initially committed to joining the scheme. Albanese's center-left government enacted laws for the gun buyback and tighter checks for gun licenses in January. The gun buyback program follows the 2025 attack at Bondi Beach.
