Two UN Peacekeepers Killed, Seven Injured in South Sudan Ambush
The Story
Sudanese opposition groups rejected General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s proposed national dialogue on August 25, 2026, arguing no credible peace process is possible while fighting continues.
On Monday, August 24, 2026, armed men ambushed a patrol in South Sudan, killing two UN peacekeepers and injuring seven others. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) reported the attack occurred while the patrol was traveling to Pajut in Jonglei State. The two peacekeepers killed and three injured were from Ethiopia. UNMISS head Anita Kiki Gbeho condemned the violence, stating it is unacceptable and may constitute war crimes.
This attack brings the number of peacekeepers killed by militias since January 1 to nine. In Guinea, a landslide at a landfill in the capital city of Conakry killed at least 30 people on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after torrential rains. Homes were buried under refuse from the Dar Es Salam landfill, which city sanitation officers said was supposed to be shut down.
Minister of Territorial Administration Djenab Toure announced on Thursday that trash from the unsafe landfill would be relocated. The same site produced a deadly landslide in 2017, killing ten people. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah asked the public to remain calm and cooperate with rescue workers. In Sudan, the US is pushing for tougher UN sanctions on warring parties, proposing to expand the existing UN arms embargo beyond Darfur to cover the whole of Sudan.
US adviser Massad Boulos said external financial and military backing fuels the war, now in its fourth year, which has killed at least 59,000 people and displaced some 13 million. Sudan's UN envoy, Al-Harith Idris, renewed calls for the UN Security Council to designate the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia as a terrorist organization. Chad has accused the Sudanese army of launching drone strikes against a convoy inside Chadian territory on Thursday, August 22, 2026, more than 100 kilometers from the border.
