Bronin Ousts 14-Term Rep. Larson in Connecticut Democratic Primary

Luke Bronin defeated incumbent Rep. John Larson in Connecticut's 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, ending Larson's nearly three-decade tenure.

Bronin, the former mayor of Hartford, secured 53.6% of the vote with approximately 87% of ballots counted, while Larson received 33.3%. Bronin, 46, made Larson's age a central issue in the campaign, contrasting his own platform of new energy, new ideas, and new perspectives with Larson's status quo approach. Larson, 78, who was seeking his 15th term, campaigned on his record and had the support of Connecticut's congressional delegation and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Bronin was endorsed by the state Democratic Party and outraised Larson through July 22, collecting $3.1 million to Larson's $2.7 million. Larson had previously experienced a public seizure during a House floor speech in 2025, which his office attributed to medication. Bronin's victory marks the seventh House Democrat ousted in primaries this year, a figure not seen in the 21st century outside of one other election cycle. Bronin will face Republican nominee Amy Chai in the general election.
