Democrat House Candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier was arrested at a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

She was arrested for blocking a road, according to one report. New York City police detained more than 100 demonstrators, including Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon, Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder, New York City Council member Chi Ossé, and Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier. Comedian Caleb Hearon, author Glennon Doyle, former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, actors Elliot Page and Cynthia Nixon, and writer Tony Kushner also participated, with some arrested.

The demonstration, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, drew around 250 protesters to 1st Avenue and 39th Street in Manhattan. Protesters wore white T-shirts with slogans like “Fund people not bombs” and “Free Palestine,” and held signs reading “Stop arming Israel” and “End the genocide.” Protesters staged a sit-in on First Avenue, blocking traffic and roadways near UN headquarters.

Police issued warnings before making arrests when individuals did not comply. Dozens of national diplomatic delegations walked out as he began speaking, leaving empty seats. Netanyahu called the departing delegates “moral cowards” and accused his critics of spreading lies about Israel. He defended Israel’s military actions in Gaza and elsewhere in the region, rejecting allegations of genocide.

He claimed Israel “didn't commit genocide. Israel prevented genocide.” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had encouraged protests against Netanyahu and had previously called him a “war criminal.” Netanyahu, in his speech, called Mamdani “the antisemitic mayor of New York” and accused him of encouraging violence against Jewish New Yorkers. Netanyahu's plane avoided Irish and French airspace en route to the UN due to International Criminal Court arrest warrant fears.
