Israel Conducts Fresh Strike in Syria After US Envoy Criticism

Israel carried out a fresh strike in Syria on Saturday, August 22, and criticized U.S. envoy Tom Barrack for his remarks on a previous attack.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called Barrack's comments full of inaccuracies and stated that Israel had shared intelligence information with authorized parties in the United States before the August 18 strike on an air base in the northwest. Katz also asserted that Barrack's remarks contradicted the stance of U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the Golan Heights.

Syria condemned an Israeli attack on the village of Beit Jinn, southwest of Damascus, on Saturday, August 22, stating it was a violation of its sovereignty and international law. Syrian officials reported that the attack hit a civilian vehicle and injured several people. The Israeli military stated on X that it had targeted a terrorist in the final stages of preparing attacks that posed an immediate threat to soldiers.

U.S. Ambassador to Turkiye Tom Barrack had previously criticized Israel's August 18 attack on the disused military air base as an unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability. Barrack suggested the strike may have been intended to provoke a conflict with Turkey. Since the December 2024 overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes in Syria.
