Apple unveiled a $299 smart-home display called HomeView on Tuesday, escalating its competition with Amazon and Google in the connected home market.

HomeView features a 7-inch touchscreen and a built-in camera that uses facial recognition and artificial intelligence to identify up to six household members. It automatically displays personalized information like calendars and messages. The device relies on Apple’s upgraded Siri AI assistant to manage tasks and operate connected appliances. HomeView is available starting November 13. Apple offers tabletop and wall-mounted versions.

The new Apple TV 4K features an A19 chip and a redesigned remote that can play a sound if lost. Apple also introduced a collection of security cameras, door locks, and thermostats, co-developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. The LG smart lock costs $349 and supports Apple Home Key. A new LG video doorbell costs $249 and has two cameras with up to 2.5K resolution.

Apple's chief marketer Greg Joswiak stated HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel personal to each user. Avi Greengart, president and lead analyst at Techsponential, praised HomeView's appearance and integration with Apple's ecosystem but noted its dependence on Apple's ecosystem could limit its appeal. Apple first released its Home app in 2016 and HomePod smart speakers in 2018. The HomeView device will not be sold in the European Union because Siri AI remains unavailable there due to EU regulations.
