Germany's Far-Right AfD Eyes Historic State Power in Saxony-Anhalt Vote

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is poised for a potentially historic state election win in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

The AfD is polling at 40% or more of voting intentions in the regional election. If the AfD wins an absolute majority of seats, it would mark the first time since 1945 that a far-right party has led a German region. The Saxony-Anhalt AfD chapter is classified by the state's Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a confirmed far-right extremist organisation.

AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund, 35, has gained popularity, with his face emblazoned on T-shirts and placards at a family festival near Magdeburg's city center. Siegmund plans to introduce a work obligation for asylum seekers within his first 100 days in office and overhaul migration policy. The party's draft government program promises deportation from minute one! and aims to reduce the number of immigrants in Saxony-Anhalt.

AfD leader Tino Chrupalla warned of voter fraud in the Sunday election, alleging some senior citizens in nursing homes had absentee ballots cast and signed for them without their knowledge. Election officials and nursing home caregivers have rejected these allegations, stating no evidence of voter fraud exists. More than three decades after Germany's 1990 reunification, lasting east-west divisions persist, with eastern Germans under-represented in politics and wages lower on average.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned that Germany's democracy needs protection from those who scorn and trample all over them, appearing to target AfD policies. It remains unclear how many of the AfD's proposed measures would be legally implementable, as some may violate international and European law or fall under federal jurisdiction.
