The Story

A U.S. Navy sailor deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln said his father was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Saturday. Joshua Aviles has been at sea for nine months while his father was taken into custody, and the arrest drew criticism as the service member remains overseas.

What they agree on

Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, father of US Navy sailor Joshua Aviles, was detained by immigration authorities in Key West, Florida, on Saturday.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Luis Manuel Aviles Roa was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol during a vehicle stop.
Joshua Aviles is a sailor deployed in the Middle East aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and posted on Facebook about his father's detention.
The Department of Homeland Security stated Luis Manuel Aviles Roa entered the U.S. unlawfully and will remain in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody pending removal proceedings.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that "Having a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate our nation's laws."

Where they split

Some outlets, including The Independent and The Straits Times, include President Donald Trump's defense of immigration measures and rights groups' concerns about the crackdown, while others focus solely on the detention event.
CBS News and NBC News provide additional details from Katty Delgado, Joshua Aviles' half-sister, regarding her stepfather's 20-year residency in the U.S. and pending immigration application.
Some articles, such as CBS News and NBC News, explicitly quote the Department of Homeland Security stating, "We are simply enforcing the laws passed by Congress. This Administration does not pick and choose which laws to enforce," while others only include the "not a free pass" quote.
