Russia Says It Helped Niger Repel Attempted Coup

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune held phone talks on Monday with Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani to review the situation in Niger.

This follows an attempted coup in Niger Republic, which Russia states it helped repel. Viktor Voropaïev, the Russian ambassador to Niger, said the Nigerien government requested Russia's assistance in quelling the mutiny. The mutiny lasted for hours between August 28 and 29, with unrest beginning overnight from Friday into Saturday at Air Base 101 in Niamey.

National security forces, in collaboration with Russian-linked Africa Corps, thwarted the mutiny. Mutineers attempted to seize power from the junta led by Abdourahamane Tchiani. Nigerien forces regained control of the strategic airbase in Niamey after suppressing the military mutiny, which involved hours of gunfire near the presidential palace, the airport, and other government sites. Military units have moved into key positions across the capital, Niamey.

The Niger junta remains in control, but the situation is tense. The Federal Government warns against the use of force to settle political differences in Niger Republic.
