Thousands Protest Kennedy Center Demolition Fears Amid Trump Threats
The Story
Thousands of people demonstrated at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. on September 18, forming a human chain amid fears President Donald Trump's administration could demolish the arts hub.
Crowds gathered in the Foggy Bottom area, carrying signs reading hands off Kennedy Center and singing songs. Actor Lynda Carter addressed the rally on Friday. Neal Racioppo, a Washington resident, stated Trump can't get his name on this cherished building, so he is depriving the world of what it could be. Another protester told AFP that Trump does not have a right to decide that an institution, a living memorial to a past president, can be demolished.
Chris Raleigh, co-founder of Hands Off the Arts, organized the gathering. CNN reported the Kennedy Center laid off about a dozen employees on Friday. The Kennedy Center, inaugurated in 1971, became a focal point of Trump's plans in 2025. Trump has pushed for major renovations, claiming the building was in disrepair. Trump's handpicked Kennedy Center board voted in 2025 to rename the institution the Trump-Kennedy Center.
In May, a judge ruled that his name was illegally added and ordered its removal. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper barred Trump from etching his name into the building. Following this ruling, the Kennedy Center board, aligned with the president, voted to close the center indefinitely for repairs. On Thursday, Judge Cooper ordered the Kennedy Center to provide 30 days' notice before making any major physical changes, including demolition.
President Trump threatened the federal courts, stating that if they failed to reverse the lower-court ruling preventing him from naming the center, he would not allow the congressionally mandated $257 million renovation to proceed. He told reporters the Kennedy Center would end up being ripped down if he did not get the recognition he wants.
An Agence France-Presse photographer captured images of Trump looking at a placard labeled "Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED" on Air Force One on September 16. A spokesperson for the center countered on Thursday that nothing is being demolished. Representative Joyce Beatty (D-OH) is spearheading a legal challenge to Trump's efforts.
