Jane Doe Tells Accused Cornell Frat Brother 'What Y'all Did Would Be Gang Rape'
The Story
In a newly revealed phone call shared by Good Morning America on Monday, October 5, 2026, Jane Doe told Matthew Ingalls, one of the men accused in the Cornell 7 case, that what y'all did would be considered gang rape.
The call occurred three weeks after the alleged incident in October 2024. Ingalls claimed Doe told him she was sober and offered a different recollection of events. Cornell University's main building was vandalized with graffiti and a glass door broken overnight as student groups protested on Monday over the university's handling of the alleged 2024 fraternity-house gang rape.
Messages condemning patriarchy and the school's handling of sexual assaults were painted on the brick wall. Jane Doe's lawsuit, filed last month, alleges she was drugged, incapacitated, and sexually assaulted by multiple members of the Chi Phi fraternity on October 19, 2024. The lawsuit names the university, seven former students, and the fraternity. Disciplinary records obtained by The New York Times provide the first public accounting of how Cornell administrators apportioned blame.
A three-person panel, tasked with enforcing federal civil rights protections under Title IX, concluded Jane Doe was sexually assaulted by two of the men she accused, resulting in their expulsion. Other accused students received lesser punishments, including suspensions, probation, and requirements to write reflection papers and attend training sessions. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten has reopened the case, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to investigate how the case was handled.
Supporters of Jane Doe have begun posting "I Am Jane Doe" messages on social media to express solidarity and confuse search algorithms attempting to identify her.
