Tinubu Directs EFCC to Halt Freeze on Osun Government Accounts

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to halt the freeze on Osun State government accounts.

The directive came after the EFCC secured a court order to freeze three accounts on August 5, pending the conclusion of its investigations. The EFCC chairman has been accused by the Accord Party of embarrassing the President, the party, the government, and the people of Osun State. The Accord Party demanded the EFCC chairman's resignation, stating the commission exceeded its statutory mandate by freezing the account, which they claim threatened public confidence in democratic institutions.

A state counsel noted that the law mandates the EFCC to obtain and properly serve a court order on the bank involved before such a restriction can take effect. The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) stated that Tinubu's directive could weaken the EFCC's fight against corruption. Opposition representatives characterized the directive as evidence of the government being at war with itself.
