Anti-Muslim Rally in Dearborn, Michigan Draws Widespread Condemnation

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, clergy of various faiths, and state and local Democratic officials are condemning Tuesday's far-right rally in Dearborn, Michigan.

They describe the "Christian Crusader March" as an intimidation campaign against the city’s Muslim community. Thousands of anti-Muslim demonstrators, many on motorcycles, marched aggressively on Dearborn's City Hall Complex. Area residents chanted "Allahu akbar" and chased some outsiders down a street. The rally was organized by Jake Lang, who Donald Trump pardoned last year for his participation in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, and Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell.

Lang encouraged followers to join, stating "CRUSADE OR BE REPLACED." Sewell also planned a pig roast. Tlaib, whose district includes Dearborn, warned that the city of approximately 105,000 residents is being targeted by Islamophobic white supremacists and Christian nationalists. She stated families were told to stay home for safety. Dearborn has the highest proportion of Muslim residents of any U.S. municipality.

Lang has gained a following by traveling to cities to attack Islam, burning Qurans and using pork to harass Muslim residents. Critics note he incites violence and then claims victimhood. Dearborn’s police chief stated the department increased police presence in anticipation of the march. Some critics say the increasing political participation of American Muslims, who now control cities like Hamtramck and Dearborn, presents a distinct challenge. In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani's top staff is composed almost entirely of Muslims.
