Google announced that K-12 schools using its software will lose access to Google Search if they ban artificial intelligence tools entirely, because search and artificial intelligence are deeply integrated.

Under the new policy, features such as Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Google Search will be turned off by default for student accounts, requiring school administrators to manually enable them. Schools wishing to disable artificial intelligence tools must also sacrifice search access and will display a message indicating unavailability. The announcement prompted immediate backlash from politicians and child advocacy groups.

Senator Bernie Sanders accused Google of extortion, while former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan condemned the move as anticompetitive behavior by an unregulated monopolist. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senator Richard Blumenthal also criticized the policy. Google defended the change by stating it gives schools more choice and introduced Guided Learning, a tutor-like mode designed to offer step-by-step problem-solving rather than direct answers.
