AI Data Centers Fuel Backlash, Transform Rural Land Markets

A grassroots revolt against AI oligarchs is reviving a fight against attempts to seize land, water, and political power, fueled by the transformation of rural land markets by AI data centers.

Investments in computing power for artificial intelligence have sparked a commercial land rush, sending property values soaring in unlikely and out-of-the-way places. AI data centers house massive computer servers that require vast amounts of electricity, water, and land. Companies are racing into rural America to build these centers and related facilities, creating boom towns and transforming land uses.

This transformation pits some of the largest U.S. corporations and their Wall Street backers against local residents and communities, who grapple with newfound competition for space, infrastructure, and natural resources. Land purchases in the U.S. for future data centers reached about $6 billion in the first half of 2026, a 79% increase from last year.

Data centers represent 27% of development sites in the U.S. this year, second only to apartment buildings. State Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller expressed concern at a July protest in Lubbock, Texas, about data centers taking up their very best farmland. Polling shows as many as 75% of Americans oppose a data center being built in their area, up from 42% last year.

Politicians from both parties, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, are taking a hard line on the infrastructure. President Donald Trump has expressed vigorous support for data center construction, stating "China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement." X announced it identified 200 accounts linked to China spreading anti-data center talking points. AI companies are investing $265 million into the midterms. 40% of new data centers have been delayed or canceled in 2026.
