Lindsay Clancy Trial Halts Twice Amid Emotional Outbursts

Lindsay Clancy's murder trial was brought to a halt twice on Wednesday when she became overwhelmed by emotion as medical examiners described the injuries she inflicted on her children.

Clancy cried out, "I can't do this," in Plymouth County Superior Court. Clancy strangled her children with exercise bands and then attempted to kill herself, an effort that left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Cell phone data extracted from Clancy's device found an apparent journal entry from October 25, 2022, where she wrote, "I sort of resent my other children because they prevent me from treating Cal like my first baby."

She also wrote, "I'm terrified of something happening to my kids or doing something wrong to mess up their development." A State Police investigator testified about Google searches Clancy made and text messages she sent on the day of the killings. Clancy has admitted to killing her children but pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis.

Her defense argues she suffered from severe postpartum depression exacerbated by overmedication. Prosecutors contend she acted intentionally and planned the murders, alleging she deliberately sent her then-husband, Patrick, to pick up medicine and takeout before killing the children. Clancy and her former husband have filed medical malpractice lawsuits against her psychiatric nurse practitioner and others. If acquitted, Clancy would be sent to a state psychiatric hospital for periodic reviews.
