Israeli Defense Forces conducted an airstrike on a cafe at the Gaza City port on Tuesday, August 19, 2026, targeting Hamas Nukhba Force commanders.

The military stated the strike killed a company commander, three platoon commanders, and several other terrorists who were planning attacks against Israeli troops. One of the targeted individuals had participated in the October 7, 2023, massacre. Palestinian news agency Shihab reported six people, including a child, were killed and 10 others wounded in the strike.

Gaza medics also reported six Palestinians killed and 14 wounded. Katz added the IDF will continue to act with force to protect soldiers and ensure peace for southern communities from within the security zone. The IDF controls roughly half of the Gaza Strip, referred to as the security zone. The strike occurred after US special envoy Jared Kushner concluded talks in the region without a breakthrough on a Gaza peace plan.

Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and held direct talks with Hamas's political chief Khalil al-Hayya in Cairo. Israel rejected a 15-point plan for Gaza that proposed Hamas gradually disarm and turn over governance to an international force in exchange for Israel's withdrawal. Kushner stated Gaza would not be rebuilt until demilitarization occurs and that the US would support Israel to finish the job properly if Hamas does not disarm. Hamas accused Prime Minister Netanyahu of deliberately undermining negotiations and affirmed its commitment to the agreement.
