Senator Tim Scott Defends Darline Graham After National Security Gaffe

Senator Tim Scott defended Senator Darline Graham on Sunday, ahead of her special GOP primary runoff election this week.

Scott called Graham the real deal, highly qualified, incredibly competent, ready for primetime, and expressed confidence she would win Tuesday's runoff. Scott's defense came days after Graham's debate gaffe against Representative Ralph Norman, her opponent in the runoff. During the debate, when asked if Taiwan and the South China Sea are important national security issues, Graham stated she was not that informed on national security and that it was not my thing, not my area of expertise.

She added that she supports the military, noting her brother was in the Air Force for 33 years and her father was in the Army. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham last month to fill her late brother Lindsey Graham's Senate seat after he died on July 11. She announced her candidacy for a full term on July 20 and received an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Some Republicans expressed concerns about her readiness following the debate. Boyd Brown, a Democratic former state legislator, described Graham as a black box.
