Luigi Mangione Expected to Plead Guilty in Federal Stalking Case, State Trial Complicated

Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty to federal stalking charges in a special hearing scheduled for Friday in Manhattan federal court.

This potential plea deal could close the federal case against him, but it also complicates a separate state murder trial. Mangione faces two federal charges: interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. Each federal charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Federal prosecutors and defense lawyers jointly requested the hastily scheduled hearing earlier this week.

Thompson was walking to UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference. Mangione was arrested at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s on December 9, 2024, five days after the shooting. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to charges in both the federal and state cases. A trial on state murder charges, including second-degree murder and firearms offenses, is scheduled to begin on September 8.

Under New York law, a state prosecution could potentially be barred if the federal case is resolved first, due to double jeopardy protections. State prosecutors objected to the possibility of a guilty plea in the federal case wiping out the state case in a letter last month. A federal judge earlier this year dismissed two other federal counts, including murder through use of a firearm, which had carried the possibility of the death penalty.

Mangione had complained about the prospect of two trials, telling a judge in February, "It's the same trial twice. One plus one is two. Double jeopardy by any commonsense definition." The terms of any potential plea agreement remain unclear, and Mangione could still change his mind before or during the hearing.
