Assam Flood Toll Reaches 97; Over 1.68 Lakh Affected

The death toll from floods in Assam has risen to 97, with over 1.68 lakh people affected across 15 districts.

The latest figures indicate a grim situation in the northeastern state. Rail services in Sivasagar, one of the worst-hit districts, have resumed with safety restrictions after flood-affected tracks were restored by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). Earlier, officials reported that 14 districts and 1.6 lakh people were affected, with the death toll reaching 95 following six additional fatalities.

Two deaths each were reported from Sivasagar and Biswanath districts on Wednesday, with one each from Golaghat and Morigaon. Sivasagar district alone has recorded 50 deaths, and 21 people have died in another unspecified district. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika has directed officials to expedite post-flood rehabilitation efforts in Sivasagar. Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi alleged that flood aid did not come from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that funds originated solely from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF).

Gaurav Gogoi claimed the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) disregarded ISRO data for three Upper Assam districts. The Chief Minister has also warned of action against unauthorized flood relief donation drives. Schools in flood-affected districts are scheduled to reopen on August 10, according to Ranoj Pegu. The exact number of people affected is over 1.68 lakh, and the number of districts impacted is 15. Officials are directing post-flood rehabilitation efforts.
