Bengaluru Food Safety Raids Uncover Rotten Meat, Expired Products

Food safety authorities in Bengaluru inspected Indira canteens on Tuesday, days after a crackdown on hotels and restaurants.

Videos surfaced on social media showing rats in kitchens and torn food packaging. The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) stated a special team inspected Indira canteens in Gottigere, Lingarajapuram, and Singasandr for quality, safety, storage, labelling, and food handling. The warehouse at the Gottigere Indira Canteen was sealed due to unhygienic conditions and improper storage, with notices issued for violations including non-compliant labelling, misbranding, and unhygienic practices.

The department warned of strict legal action against food business operators found violating regulations. This follows a broader inspection drive across Bengaluru where 30 teams examined 60 hotels over three days. The drive uncovered expired dairy products, rotten meat, fungus-infected vegetables, and used cooking oil. Authorities seized 640 kg of meat, chicken, and fish, 276 kg of rotten vegetables, 45 litres of expired milk and curd, and 49 litres of used cooking oil. Inspections also extended to cold storage and distribution centers supplying to hotels.
