The Story
Greece and Israel signed a $3.5 billion defense deal on Monday, under which Israel will build a multi-layered air defense system for Greece, known as "Achilles Shield." Greece plans to spend approximately €28 billion ($32 billion) by 2036 on military modernization, including the acquisition of F-35 fighter jets from the U.S. and frigates from France and Italy. Greek industry will undertake over 25 percent of the work, exceeding €700 million, and Athens will gain source-code access for independent system operation and sustainment.
