Democrats Face Dilemma Over Streamer Hasan Piker's Controversial Statements

Michigan Democratic US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed faces a challenge from Republican Mike Rogers, who is using attacks on streamer Hasan Piker to target El-Sayed's base.

El-Sayed, who won his primary by 0.9 percent, had hoped to leverage Piker's audience of 11.5 million young leftists. Piker, who spends seven to eight hours daily on Twitch discussing left-wing politics and gaming, has a shock-jock mentality and is stridently anti-Israel and anti-Zionist. He has expressed admiration for Mao Zedong and called the collapse of the Soviet Union a catastrophe.

Piker has also made comments about Jewish Americans that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called dangerous and anti-Semitic. Vice President Vance used Piker to portray El-Sayed as anti-American. El-Sayed has attempted to distance himself from Piker, calling him a streamer in California. Piker has claimed he is the victim of hysteria, comparing himself to trans athletes or migrant caravans.

Some Democrats are trying to dismiss Piker as irrelevant, while others, including Senators Jon Ossoff, Cory Booker, and Jacky Rosen, have echoed concerns about his statements. Jessica Tarlov defended El-Sayed on "The Five," pivoting to discuss Greg Gutfeld's remarks about Jewish candidates. Cenk Uygur, identified as Piker's uncle, has defended him, including during a televised clash with Piers Morgan where his chair broke mid-rant.
