Senator Ed Markey Defeats Seth Moulton in Massachusetts Democratic Primary

Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey won a major primary election victory on Tuesday, defeating his rival, US Representative Seth Moulton, with a 65, 35 triumph.

Markey declared the win a testament to the power of the progressive movement. He made stymieing the plans of AI oligarchs a part of his campaign, promising to tax the rich, block the bombs, and stop data centers from polluting their communities. Markey has been working for more than a decade to propose policies to take back power from Big Tech.

Moulton's primary challenge attempted to frame the contest as a generational struggle between a 47-year-old rival and an 80-year-old incumbent. Moulton had a failed bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Markey, an 80-year-old progressive in Congress for nearly five decades, campaigned on "Medicare for All" and embracing transgender rights. Moulton, described as a centrist opportunist, had previously expressed disagreement with progressive views, including staunch support for trans rights, stating he did not want his daughters getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete.

Markey denounced Moulton for throwing trans Americans under the bus. Markey won overwhelmingly, performing better in precincts with larger Black or Hispanic populations, and carried Boston, Worcester, and Springfield. Democratic voters in Massachusetts bucked a national trend by backing incumbent Democrats. House incumbents Richard Neal, Stephen Lynch, and Dan Koh also beat their challengers. Dan Koh, a former top aide to President Joe Biden, won the Democratic primary to succeed Rep. Seth Moulton in Massachusetts’s 6th Congressional District with 41.1% of the vote.
