Nigel Farage Wins Clacton By-Election Against Novelty Candidates

Nigel Farage won the Clacton by-election on August 14, 2026, securing 63% of the vote.

The Reform UK leader had resigned his seat in July, triggering the special election amid an investigation into a £5 million gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. Farage stated the gift was for his personal security and not political. The parliamentary standards inquiry, suspended upon his resignation, has since reopened. Farage's decision to step down and run again was intended to allow the people of Clacton to judge him.

Major parties, including Labour and the Conservatives, boycotted the election, leaving Farage to compete against numerous fringe and novelty candidates, Count Binface, who secured 27% of the vote. Farage described his victory as a victory against the establishment and a two fingers gesture to the political establishment. He did not attend the election count, stating he would not be demeaned by nobodies.

The by-election was largely seen as a waste of public money by some, but it also highlighted public support for candidates outside political orthodoxy. Farage earned over £2 million from outside jobs during his previous tenure as Clacton's MP, working the equivalent of 219 days over two years while contributing to Parliament fewer than 90 times.
