South Korea Stresses US Alliance After Trump Orders Reduced Military Exercises

South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday stressed the importance of a solid alliance with the United States, as many South Koreans expressed bafflement and concern over President Donald Trump’s abrupt order to substantially reduce joint military exercises.

Trump made the surprise announcement in a social media post just before the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises began on Monday. These exercises are largely designed to sharpen readiness against North Korean threats and have been held for 50 years. Trump cited his very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s refusal to join the U.S. war against Iran as reasons for his decision.

He stated the exercises are costly and send an inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korea. Trump told reporters in Washington on Monday that Kim Jong Un had responded to his diplomatic outreach, marking what would be their first engagement since Trump's first term. Trump said he was making the situation on the Korean Peninsula much safer by reducing the scale of the war games.

South Korean officials confirmed the exercises began as planned, and the Pentagon offered no public explanation of what would be cut. The Ulchi Freedom Shield involves about 18,000 South Korean personnel and integrates computer-assisted command-post training with field exercises. The U.S.-South Korean alliance was forged during the 1950-53 Korean War. Confidence in the U.S. has eroded among many South Koreans due to Trump’s tariff war and a 2025 immigration raid in Georgia that detained hundreds of South Korean workers.

South Korea’s Hankook Ilbo newspaper stated Trump’s announcement reveals the stark reality of a faltering Korea-U.S. Alliance, fueling public anxiety. Lee Jae Myung, a liberal, has called for a stronger, self-reliant defense posture. Trump also questioned U.S. support for NATO allies who have refused to contribute to the Iran war. The immediate military consequences of Trump's order remain unclear due to the Pentagon's lack of public explanation regarding specific cuts.
