Bangladesh Battles World's Worst Measles Outbreak; US Cases Top 4,400
The Story
Bangladesh is battling the world's worst measles outbreak, with 202,000 suspected cases reported since mid-March to October 9, according to the World Health Organization.
Of these, 22,000 cases are laboratory-confirmed. The outbreak has resulted in 1,147 deaths, with 94 percent of reported deaths occurring among children under five years old. Mark Jit, a WHO vaccine adviser and professor at New York University, described the situation as a real warning to every country. Bangladesh's routine vaccination program faltered in 2025, after almost achieving the 95 percent coverage level the WHO states is necessary to prevent outbreaks.
A Reuters review of WHO documents and interviews indicates Bangladesh's emergency response was hampered by data that excluded millions of children, preparation shortcomings, and a failure to reach enough parents. Ziauddin Hyder, special assistant on health affairs to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, stated in September that the government was doing everything possible to end the outbreak.
The government did not respond to further questions sent in October for this article. In the United States, measles cases have exceeded 4,400 this year, with 4,410 total cases recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday. This figure is set to more than double the 2,289 infections confirmed last year. Pennsylvania is experiencing its worst measles outbreak in over three decades, reporting a sixth death.
The CDC is sending a disease detective to Pennsylvania. Berks County in Pennsylvania currently has 7 measles cases, and demand for vaccination is increasing there. The US, which declared measles eliminated in 2000, could lose this status in a matter of weeks, pending the conclusions of a Pan American Health Organization meeting next month.
