Trump Threatens 50% Auto Tariffs; Ontario Premier Ford Retaliates
The Story
President Donald Trump threatened to double the headline tariff on Canadian automobiles and parts to 50% starting in January 2027.
This followed tariffs of 50% on other Canadian goods that took effect Saturday after trade talks collapsed. Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded by telling President Trump twice to kiss my a--. Ford also stated that everything's on the table, including electricity, critical minerals, and fuel, if the trade war continues. Ford said Ontario could cut off electricity exports to the US entirely, noting that Canada exported $3.3 billion worth of electricity to the US in 2025, with over 20 states importing from Canada.
New York and Michigan were the largest importers from Ontario. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada was suspending trade negotiations with the US on Friday, citing last-minute changes to the proposed deal that were unfair, uneconomic. Carney vowed to retaliate dollar for dollar for any tariffs imposed. Trump posted on Truth Social that Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years and claimed, "WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!"
The Canadian Ministry of Finance announced that officials would hold a press conference on Tuesday to outline new measures to support Canadian workers and businesses. Ford stated he told Prime Minister Carney on Friday that Ontario would not support the aborted US trade deal and would not lift its ban on American alcohol in Liquor Control Board of Ontario stores.
Ford also criticized Trump by invoking Ronald Reagan, saying Reagan would be throwing up on him from the picture if he knew what was going on. The US and Canada entered trade negotiations last month to address Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods. Canada is the world's top supplier of potash, used for fertilizers, and almost 60% of US crude oil imports come from Canada. Trump's intentions behind the tariffs appeared clear in his Truth Social post: Build in the U.S.
