Europe Braces for Fifth Extreme Heatwave of Summer

Much of Europe is preparing for another intense heatwave, with temperatures forecast to reach the mid-30s Celsius in parts of Britain and France and spread across the continent.

Spain could see temperatures as high as 42C later this week. This marks Europe's fifth heatwave of the summer. The current heatwave follows periods of record drought that have driven water levels in major rivers to historic lows, ignited wildfires, and contributed to thousands of deaths. High temperature warnings were in place across western, central, and southern Europe on Monday as a heat dome intensifies.

The United Kingdom's Met Office warned at the weekend that the summer's fifth hot spell was about to take hold. The national weather agency in France is warning of temperatures approaching 40C in southeastern France from Tuesday. The relentlessly dry conditions have also revealed historical artifacts along the River Danube, including a woolly mammoth and Nazi motorbike.
