Chuck Schumer Heralds Generational Remake After Midterm Victories
The Story
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the midterm election results on Wednesday as a generational remapping of the Senate map after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress.
Schumer stated that Democrats won 54 seats and counting in the new Congress, posting a social media image depicting Republican candidates on a grill with the text stating that the burgers and dogs are fully cooked. Schumer also indicated that the incoming Democratic majority will use the power of the purse to end the war with Iran.
Progressive advocacy groups and lawmakers immediately challenged Schumer regarding his continued leadership of the caucus. Sen. Chris Van Hollen stated on Wednesday that no one should commit to supporting Schumer as leader without securing commitments for a bold economic agenda addressing the cost of living. Peggy Flanagan also stated a preference for a new Senate Democratic leader.
Comedian and podcast host Jon Stewart urged Democrats to remove the seniority system and replace Schumer, describing the current leadership as part of an old system. Despite the internal dissent from newly elected lawmakers and external progressive groups, Schumer stated that he possesses the votes necessary to be reelected as leader when the caucus holds leadership elections in December.
