Nick Kyrgios Suspended After Positive Cocaine Test
The Story
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from tennis after testing positive for cocaine.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced the suspension on Wednesday. Kyrgios submitted a sample during the Mallorca Open on June 22, which was later found to contain benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. The former Wimbledon finalist admitted to making a huge mistake and apologized, stating he will step away from public life to get myself right.
Kyrgios, who was previously ranked world number 13, is now ranked 919th after a series of injuries. He has won seven ATP Tour singles titles. Kyrgios has apologized to his family, fans, and sponsors. The ITIA announced the suspension of the 31-year-old Australian.
