Gaza Smuggling Booms Amid Israeli Restrictions, Officials Accused

An Associated Press investigation revealed an increase in the smuggling of goods into the Gaza Strip, occurring as Israel has imposed restrictions on various items.

Palestinians are facing inflated prices for essential goods like groceries and batteries, and hospitals are reportedly turning to smugglers for medicine and equipment. The AP investigation, which utilized Israeli court documents and interviews with truckers, traders, Palestinian officials, and UN and Israeli officials, indicates that Israeli soldiers and other middlemen are accused of profiting millions of dollars from this illicit trade.

Cigarettes and tobacco, banned since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, are reportedly generating the largest profits for smugglers and merchants. However, a wide range of other items, including iPhones, solar panels, fuel, and anesthetics, are also being brought into Gaza illegally. Israel classifies many items, such as concrete, vehicle parts, and X-ray machines, as dual use, asserting they could be repurposed by Hamas militants for military functions, leading to restrictions or outright bans on their entry.

The investigation involved interviews with traders, merchants, truckers, Palestinian officials, UN officials, and Gaza residents, many speaking anonymously due to safety concerns or fear of retribution.
