Namibia Reaffirms Solidarity with Cuba Amid Fidel Castro Centennial

Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare, Prime Minister of Namibia, delivered a statement in Cuba on August 10, 2026, commemorating the centenary of Fidel Castro Ruz's birth.

Ngurare reaffirmed Namibia's solidarity with Cuba, noting that Namibia was among 136 countries that recently called for an end to the economic blockade on Cuba. Fidel Castro would have turned 100 years old on August 13, 2026, having passed away in 2016. Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of Namibia, also issued a statement honoring Castro's legacy, describing him as a consequential figure of the twentieth century whose ideals resonate globally.

Cuba is marking Castro's centennial amid one of its most severe economic and political crises in recent history. The country faces acute shortages of food and water, chronic power cuts exceeding 20 hours a day in most provinces, and declining industrial and tourist output. These issues are exacerbated by a U.S. oil embargo and hardened sanctions imposed by the Trump administration since January.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated at an international conference on Castro's legacy that "Fidel's legacy speaks to us today with greater force than ever." In June, the Cuban government approved 176 measures aimed at opening the socialist economy to private and foreign investment, which would represent an unprecedented embrace of free-market capitalism. Raúl Castro, the 95-year-old head of the Cuban armed forces, appeared in public for the first time in months at an event in Havana to mark his brother's birth.
