Artificial intelligence, soaring energy costs, and record public debt will be the primary topics at the 2026 International Monetary Fund, World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva identified these as key risks to the global economic outlook, warning that countries face challenges navigating the AI investment boom, persistent energy supply disruptions, and rising debt-servicing costs. Georgieva noted that AI investment could rival earlier transformative infrastructure developments and that AI hardware and related products already constitute over a tenth of global goods trade.

Banga stated that the global economy has shown resilience due to AI investments and oil market adjustments, but developing countries face challenges from spikes in diesel and fertilizer prices, high interest rates, and depleted fiscal coffers from the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. World Bank estimates show developing countries owe external creditors about $400 billion in 2026, with interest payments making up one-third of that total.

Banga indicated the bank could make available up to $100 billion in funds if the situation worsens. Bangkok police have banned gatherings near the meeting venues.
