Saudi foreign ministry official Dr Rayed Krimly on Thursday accused Iran of encouraging the Houthis in their latest escalation, adding that Iran continues to arm, train, and support the group.

The Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen stated on Thursday that Houthis attempted to attack dozens of Saudi airports, ports, and oil facilities. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki reported Houthis launched 20 attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh this month, killing 17 people and wounding 333 others. Attacks on Abha airport killed three people and wounded 28.

Maliki also said Houthis acquired advanced military technology with the help of regional actors. The coalition destroyed 127 weapons storage facilities and launch platforms in Yemen's mountainous areas. The European Union and Gulf countries postponed a major summit scheduled for Riyadh on October 24, 2026, due to growing security concerns from Houthi attacks. France began implementing operational elements of an agreement to help protect Saudi Arabia's oil facilities, with foreign ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux declining to detail deployed assets.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of military means on September 24 to protect the Yanbu oil terminal. Gulf markets ended lower on Thursday as Houthis threatened more attacks, with the Saudi index dropping 0.3%. The International Monetary Fund warned a long Middle East war and disruption to energy production posed the biggest risk to regional economies.

The FIFAe Finals 2026, scheduled for Jeddah from October 16-25, were postponed, and the Asian Cup 2027 could be postponed until 2028. Yemen's civil war reignited in July after an UN-brokered truce collapsed. Houthis vowed to continue attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities, describing them as legitimate targets and a response to Saudi strikes on Yemen.

Dr Krimly stated Saudi Arabia remains in communication with Iran, but Tehran appears unwilling to offer concessions, and Houthis refused to meet in Oman weeks ago.
