Iranian Commercial Ship Struck in Strait of Hormuz, One Dead
The Story
An Iranian commercial vessel was struck early Sunday near Hengam Island in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one person killed and four wounded, according to Iranian state media.
Hossein Amir Teymoori, the governor of Qeshm, stated the Iranian commercial container vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British maritime security alert service, reported receiving an attack report late Saturday, noting a vessel was on fire after being struck by an unknown projectile and its crew was being evacuated.
The incident occurred off Qeshm Island in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Iranian authorities claimed one person was killed and four were wounded after an Iranian commercial ship was struck. The incident is reported amid an ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran for control over the energy chokepoint. Iran-backed rebels in Yemen are also stepping up attacks in the region, contributing to the heightened tensions. The strike on the Iranian cargo ship adds to the cycle of violence in the strategic waterway.
