US Rejects Iran Peace Plan, Disputes Drone Seizure in Hormuz
The Story
US CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins on Sunday rejected Iran’s claim of seizing an advanced US unmanned underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz.
Captain Hawkins stated the US maintains “positive control” of its operational drone assets and called the IRGC’s claim “clearly desperate.” Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) Navy, however, asserted it captured an “advanced submersible called Remus 600” and is examining its stored data. This marks the second such claim this month, following an earlier assertion of seizing a Dive-LD UUV.
President Donald Trump on Saturday rejected Iran’s peace proposal aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump described the Iranian plan as “not acceptable,” stating Iran wants a deal because “they’re losing so badly.” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Sunday that Iran stands firm on its conditions for reopening the waterway.
Araghchi stated that mediators have not officially relayed a US rejection of the plan, despite Trump’s public comments. Iran’s proposal, transmitted via Qatari mediators at the UN General Assembly, called for a cessation of all Middle East hostilities, including in Lebanon. It also sought a return to conditions of a collapsed ceasefire deal, which included the release of frozen Iranian assets, lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and an end to the US naval blockade.
In return, Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin negotiations. The IRGC Navy maintains the Strait of Hormuz is “closed” and warns against unauthorized passage, requiring ships to use approved routes and pay fees. The conflict between Washington and Tehran began nearly seven months ago with deadly strikes on Iran on February 28.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy supply route, has seen commercial traffic reduced to a fraction of pre-war levels. President Trump claimed the US transported a “record amount of oil” through Hormuz last night, “more than we took out before the war.” US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper reported American forces supported the movement of over one billion barrels of crude through Hormuz in the previous two months.
