Russian Missile Strike Kills 10, Injures 17 in Ukraine's Kharkiv Region

A Russian missile attack on Tuesday killed 10 people in Pechenihy, a village in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, Ukrainian authorities said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated the Russians launched a brutal attack on a busy intersection with a post office and stores, surrounded by residential buildings. The attack injured a further 17 people, according to Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of the surrounding region. The strike damaged 10 private buildings, a cafe, a post office, a store, and at least seven cars.

Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office reported that preliminary information indicates Russia used two small Banderol cruise missiles. Zelenskiy posted photos showing a destroyed building, cars on fire, and emergency responders. Zelenskiy vowed to definitely respond to the Russian strike. He also called on Ukraine's partners to complement their responses with actions to put pressure on Russia and support Ukraine.

The Kharkiv region, parts of which are occupied by Russian forces, has been heavily impacted since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The United Nations reports that more civilians have been killed in the war in recent months than in any period since the invasion began. Russian officials reported that 620 drones flew towards the Moscow region overnight, with several people wounded and buildings hit.

Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov stated the most serious consequences were in the Pavlovsky Posad district, where a house burned down. Krymenergo, Crimea's largest power supplier, reported power outages in southern districts after Ukrainian drone attacks overnight. Russia warned Britain of consequences for supplying drones to Ukraine used to attack Russian territory. There was no immediate public comment from Russia on the attack in Pechenihy.
