Truck Drives Through Kansas Soccer Game, Kills Two
The Story
A truck drove into a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man.
Ten other people were hospitalized with traumatic injuries, which ranged from minor to severe but are not believed to be life-threatening. An additional adult was hospitalized for non-traumatic medical issues. Wichita police Captain Aaron Moses stated that the two people killed were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured include two youths aged 5, two aged 8, a 9-year-old, and five adults.
The ages of the injured people ranged from 5 to 68. A 34-year-old woman was driving the truck, which ended up in a field at the west end of the Stryker Sports Complex. She is in custody and cooperating with investigators, but Captain Moses did not confirm if she had been arrested. Two juveniles were passengers in the truck.
The driver had a child playing soccer at the complex, but not on the field where the incident occurred. Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls about the incident at 3:25 p.m. local time. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said authorities are working to determine why the incident happened. Mayor Lily Wu described the day as heartbreaking for Wichita, stating that families came to enjoy watching their children play soccer and could not have imagined the tragedy. The City of Wichita announced that all events at the soccer complex have been canceled until further notice.
