Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, claimed the Pentagon barred his access to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar to hide damage suffered during the Iran war.

Senator Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Defense Appropriations Committee, visited the Middle East this week on a Congressional Delegation trip to assess damage from the Iran war. Murphy requested access to the base through a letter and direct appeal to U.S. Central Command leadership prior to his trip. A senior Defense Department official stated that Senator Murphy's office was informed before his trip that he would not receive Department of War support to access Al Udeid Air Base.

This decision was consistent with the Secretary of War's directive on travel restrictions in the region, ordered on March 3, 2026. Al Udeid Air Base, the largest military installation in the Middle East, had reportedly suffered damage from drone strikes during the conflict. Senator Murphy described the denial of access as unprecedented. The Department of State supported his trip to the region.

Senator Murphy plans to draft language that would explicitly require the Department of Defense to grant members of Congress access to military bases overseas under all circumstances. He acknowledged that passing such legislation by the end of the year is unlikely but believes it will be an important part of discussions for next year's appropriations and defense authorization bills.

The extent of the damage at Al Udeid Air Base and the full reasons behind the denial of access to Senator Murphy remain points of contention between the Senator and the Defense Department.
