India Prepares for 80th Independence Day Celebrations at Red Fort

India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the celebrations at Delhi’s Red Fort.

The flag-hoisting ceremony will feature a 21-gun salute fired by the ceremonial 1721 Field Battery, utilizing indigenous 105mm Light Field Guns. Major Pawan Singh Shekhawat will lead the battery, with Naib Subedar Anuthosh Sarkar serving as Gun Position Officer. Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan will assist Prime Minister Modi during the flag hoisting, and Major Lokendra Singh Shekhawat will command the National Flag Guard.

Approximately 27,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony, including 5,000 special guests from various fields. The celebrations will commemorate 150 years of the National Song Vande Mataram and emphasize the role of India’s youth in achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. Security at the Red Fort has been enhanced with a multi-layered anti-terror response plan and over 1,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras.

Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory, closing several roads near the Red Fort from 4 am to 10 am on August 15. The event will be broadcast live across the Doordarshan network, including DD National and DD News, with live coverage beginning at 6:30 am. Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his 'Tryst with Destiny' speech on August 14, 1947, the night before India officially gained independence from British rule.

India's nominal GDP is USD 3.92 trillion for 2025-26, positioning it as the world's sixth-largest economy, according to the International Monetary Fund. Its GDP per capita is $2,813 in 2026. Preparations for the flag-hoisting ceremony are also underway at the historic Golconda Fort.
