Jerusalem Reform Synagogue Vandalized, Pride Flags Torn Down in Weekend Attack

Vandals broke into Kol HaNeshamah, a prominent Reform synagogue in Jerusalem's Baka neighborhood, over the weekend, damaging the building and artwork.

The assailants tore down Pride flags displayed by the congregation. Security footage released by the Reform movement shows at least three individuals at the site, with no congregants present at the time. Rabbi Debi Shoua Haim of Kol HaNeshamah stated the incident was serious, involving unknown individuals who damaged the building, vandalized art, and removed Pride flags representing the community's values of inclusion and acceptance.

The congregation provided security footage to police, who initiated an investigation through Jerusalem’s Moriah station. Police sent a detective to the synagogue on Saturday to examine the footage and collect fingerprints. Rabbi Shoua Haim noted the incident occurred during the Hebrew month of Elul, a period of repentance. Kol HaNeshamah is recognized as one of Israel’s best-known Reform congregations and has faced previous attacks related to its support for the LGBTQ community.

In 2018, a large rock was thrown into its courtyard during Simchat Torah celebrations, prompting a police complaint. In June 2023, the synagogue reported two break-ins within weeks, during which Pride flags displayed for Pride Month were torn down. Intruders also entered the sanctuary during one of those 2023 incidents. The synagogue's director stated that the atmosphere is simply not good.
