DFW Airport Scraps Islamic Wash Stations After Governor's Order

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has dropped plans to install Islamic foot-washing stations in Terminal D restrooms.

The decision came after Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered a review of state grants to entities operating two major Texas airports over religious accommodations. Abbott stated that ablution facilities appear designed to single out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion. That is illegal. He directed state and federal officials to review grants awarded to airports across Texas concerning Islamic washing facilities.

Abbott also demanded a federal Department of Transportation investigation into Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport for installing an Islamic wudu washing area. DFW Airport stated it had been reviewing a proposal for the project and accelerated that review after the governor's directive. The airport had previously planned to add the stations to two Terminal D restrooms.
