Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Shakes Tokyo Region, Injuring Dozens, Disrupting Trains

An earthquake hit the Tokyo region, injuring scores of people. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan early Sunday, causing strong shaking across Tokyo and surrounding areas, including the broader Kanto region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the quake was centered around the southern part of the Ibaraki Prefecture, close to Tokyo, at a depth of roughly 68 kilometers. The quake struck at 2am local time. At least 37 people were injured, with officials stating most injuries were light. Regional train services in Tokyo were disrupted on Sunday morning, according to East Japan Railway Company, and transport services faced some disruptions.

The JMA website showed intensity levels of lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Ibaraki and Saitama. Authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat. The public is warned to remain vigilant for strong shaking over the next week.
