FBI Director Kash Patel rebuked Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday during an oversight hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, accusing them of acting like buffoons on Capitol Hill.

Patel appeared on Fox News after the hearing, stating that Democrats don't want to participate in the most prolific reduction in violent crime in U.S. history and instead engage in baseless personal attacks. He claimed Democrats want to discuss "Russia collusion" and have the mainstream media avoid covering the reduction in violent crime, which he attributed to President Trump and his law enforcement team.

Data from the Council of State Governments’ Justice Center shows violent crimes fell in both 2023 and 2024. Patel also clashed with Sen. Peter Welch, and the hearing involved discussions on hiring standards, bestiality, hockey, and Hawaiian holidays. Patel defended a new FBI policy that does not automatically disqualify potential hires who have engaged in bestiality, stating the change was to avoid discriminating against victims of sex trafficking forced into such acts.

Sen. John Kennedy questioned why bestiality would be considered, and Patel clarified that the policy applies to victims trafficked into such acts. Sen. Dick Durbin also inquired about the policy, asking if applicants who engaged in bestiality were qualified candidates the FBI was losing. Patel also faced questions from Sen. Richard Blumenthal regarding the firing of a dozen agents from a counterintelligence unit tasked with monitoring threats with Iran, days before the U.S. launched an attack against the country.

Patel stated these individuals were not Iran experts and that his priority is to prevent a weaponized FBI. Patel was also pressed by Sen. Welch on whether he would send federal agents into polling stations for the November midterms, with Patel stating, "I have pledged unequivocally that I will not participate in your charade of lies." He defended the FBI's role in election integrity and stated the bureau will not shy away from that effort.
